Default Golf S badge??

Hello all

I regularly see Golf MK1 with a 'Golf S' emblem. What does the 'S' stand for, I read on the internet different opinions...

Thanks in advance!

Default

Basic version with a 1.5 L, 1.6 L and from 1979 also a 1.3 L engine.

Same with LS and GLS. The "S" stands for the larger engine than the base engine (1100 cc)
