OK, you twisted my arm. My car collecting started 24 years ago with buying two new BMWs. My wife bought a 325iX after she T-boned a police car in her 325e. That same year I bought the first 750iL to hit our shores. Somehow GM got their hands on it and took it apart before I took delivery. They didn't do a very good job of putting it back together and I had horrendous electrical problems. They replaced the car, but I never made it home from the dealership. They missed a weld on the radiator and painted over it. Two hours later I was in a meeting with a BMW VP and was told they would send us to Germany to get #3, which I still have. My wife still has the 325iX, which has 107,000 miles on the original clutch. She got a new Z3 in '97 and drives that exclusively in the summer.







Luckily, I am married to a true gear head. The Porsche Continental Cabrio is also hers. My wife is a Concours judge. She had a group of old pick-ups to judge a few years ago. On the way home she said, "We really need a pick-up in the collection." How would you respond, except to get one? I found a pristine restored '41 Ford Pick-up.




I'm jumping ahead. The collection started in ernest about 10 years ago with a beautiful triple-black '77 Town Car that stalled in front of my house. It was 25 years old and had under 13,000 miles on it. My father drove Lincolns of that era so it spoke to me. I bought the car, spent $129 in parts for some gaskets, carb kit and EGR valve and got it running great. That was the beginning of the Continental Collection.




I really wanted a motorcycle, but my wife was dead set against it. She suggested that I look for a big convertible, instead. I went to e-bay and started looking at the mid-60s slab-side Lincoln Continental convertibles, but didn't find anything as nice as I'd like. All were projects, and I had enough going. I scrolled down to the '50s cars and spotted a rear-quarter view of a '56 Continental Mark II, but this one that caught my eye was a convertible. I was sure they didn't make any production convertibles, so I did some research and found out that there were 3 made. That's a long story for another time, but you can probably see why I fell for it.




The Continental Mark II was followed by another Continental, this time an 18-foot '56 Chris Craft Continental that was a time-capsule that had never been sanded. I'm not a boater, but bought it as a prop to show the Mark II with.




Then came the Porsche Continental Cabrio. Only about 100 were shipped to the US and fewer than 10 remain. Somewhere along the way I built the '51 Royal Spartanette car hauler http://cardomain.com/ride/340096/5. Bring snacks if you want to view the build.




A couple of years ago I bought the most recent addition to the collection, a very rare 1933 Continental Flyer, the only know running example in this hemisphere. There's a RHD version running in New Zealand. I've driven this car extensively, completing a trip across Michigan last year. Life is different at 45 mph.




In addition to the other Continentals I have a 1968 Lincoln limousine that is a splice of two cars, currently in restoration and a 1969 Continental Mark II that's pretty rough. I may get to that one in retirement.

Yes, one of the first things I did after getting the Porsche was removing the bracket, welding the holes in the bumper and refinishing to restore the proper appearance of a 356.

Those two cars are mesmerizing...!!
