I am Ainokea From Hilo Hawaii. I've been a VW mechanic for 40 years and can't imagine doing anything else. Currently I drive a 1973 beetle with a 1955cc engine. To avoid scrutiny by the local constabulary, I've kept the
stock look, stock rims and trim, not lowered, no popped open deck lid.
My wife does, on occasion, allow me to drive it. She also allows me to do all maintenance no questions asked. There should be a law.....

Welcome! Driving an old beetle on hawai! nice!

Have any tips on places to visit in Hawaii? We' re coming to Ohau, Maui and Big Island in October for two weeks (honeymoon!!!)

On Oahu, visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, on Maui, try one of the tours up to Haleakala, on the Big Island, you've got to visit Kilauea Volcanoes National Park. There have been ongoing eruptions since the 60's, some of them quite spectacular. The Kona side has evolved into a miniature Waikiki but Waimea has kept some of the old ways in spite of the huge influx of mainlanders into the area. Honokaa is a place where they still have wooden sidewalks and hitching posts for your horse. There are a number of nice old
villages from the sugar plantation days, on the Hamakua Coast as well as the
Ka'u side.
I would recomend a nite or two stay at the Volcano House. It's an old hotel restaurant built on the rim of Kilauea Volcano. The steam bath/sauna is heated by the Volcano, the restaurant is very nice and the food is pretty good.
Hilo is a mix of some old and some new, you just have to find the old.
Hope your honeymoon is truly memorable.

What is the dub scene like in Hawaii ?

The aircooled VW scene here in Hawaii is really nothing like it was back in the 70's and 80's. There are still some of us die hard airheads around though. In the last 25 years or so, the intrest has been the Japanese cars, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru, and naturally water cooled VW's. I personally was away from aircooled for nearly 20 years and just last year decided that all this OBDII garbage was not for me any more. I work in a VW shop here in Honolulu and a customer was asking a reasonable price for her bug so I bought it and sold my GTI. Within hours my order for parts was in the mail. As soon as everything was delivered, I started building my engine
installing it as soon as it was completed. Since completion, I've been allowed to drive it, OCCASIONALLY, as my wife has laid claim to it. Thats ok because she can't build engines and needs me for maintenance and up grading.
At any length, there are still several clubs around and a few VW swap meets, all of which I try to attend, and a couple of shows every year. The scene isn't dead, it just slowed down.
