just ditch that EGR !!
My GD type4 engine had one as well,but I had the same proble as you have ... some parts
were in a very bad condition when I bought the fuel injected Type4 engine.
Just make sure that you block off the hole in te central intake manifold (injection),and make
sure that you don't have any exhaust leaks or false (intake)air .. the last problem might/could
kill your engine
