shortblock , longblock ???
what r thy mean ? what kind of engines are short block or longblock ? if i am right polo engines are shortblock golf, passat etc...engines are longblock....
|
Longblock, the VW engines leaning backwards. 1600cc and more
Shortblock, VW engines (polo) standing verticaly, 900cc - 1600cc |
One correction : there were also 1500 cc engines tilting backwards
|
in aircooled, it's even different.
|
Just look at the position of the exhaustmanifold.
(since there are 160occ's in both groups) |
The terms shortblock and longblock does not have anything to do with the engine type, it is a term commonly used when talking about exchange engines, in any type of car. A shortblock is the engine with internals, but without the cylinder head, a longblock is the engine with cylinder head, but still without the accessories like manifolds, alternator etc.
When talking about aircooleds, a shortblock is the engine case with the crankshaft and camshaft installed, but without the cylinders and heads. A longblock is a complete engine case with internals, cylinders and heads. An engine ready for installation is also commonly called a turnkey engine. |

Thank you Perl :)

hmm, didn't know that ..
Thanks Perl |
I know another thing to create maximum confusion.
2.0 ABA ABF 2E etc engines are 16mm higher (engine block itself) so they are called longblocks. |
Quote:
that's common in the aircooled world. maybe it'll be the new standard in europe. |
It's not only common in the aircooled world, look to the world of american V8 engines, and you'll see the exact same terms there.

We refer to the 16mm taller blocks (only the ABA 2.0 8v here) as a Tall Block BEACAUSE of this confusion Hahahaa. But it sure does make for a Revvy motor :D Now to get a true ABF head to stick on it HAhahaa |
