steeringbox protection

Took friday off from work and cruised over to hans' place. The man's got a hydrolic lift, so it's much easier to work on the chassis.
We replaced the worn front shocks with some new white Kyb items. These new ones work both ways, much better not it's so low. We also upgraded the fusebox, a much needed upgrade as the 6V jalogene bulbs kept melting the stock fusebox. The chassis under the cab got a fresh coat of paint and we made a skidplate for the steeringbox. Based on an old brakeshoe from an oval, it bolted almost straight on, just bend a piece of steel and weld it on the back. The other side of the support bar is bolted onto one of the bolts that hold the steeringbox in place.

i think so, it sure left a nice big balck stripe on the floor just outside hans' workshop :-)
(the guy only digs stock cars, so the steep exit doesn't bother him)

sure, just make sure the back of the brakepad rests against the steering box. the bracket is only there to hold it in place, that way if you hit the street all the force wil be directed into the steeringbox/chassis and not the bracket (which would probably bend). at the front i had to bend the edge of the belly pan a tiny bit, so the edge of the brakepad would fit in the gap between the chassis and belly pan

I'm going to try to fit a T3 rack and pignion to my crew cab.
Much beter steering response and even power steering is possible

Man, that sounds like a cool upgrade, but how come did you think of it on the 1st place? does it get hit very often? do you ride so low?

ploon 19-10-2004 14:26

it's got something to do with braking to late and going over/off the speedbump to fast. that way you can hit the tarmac pretty bad. mind you i was running crappy stock shocks up front (which have now been replaced with kyb gas-units)
