VW/volvo !!?

Hi to all.
Got a request I hope you dont mind. I have just bought a Volvo 740
turbo diesel. And yes, before you throw me out ,it has a 2.4 inline
6 cylinder VW motor which I want to get to understand. It has a
YV engine number which I cant trace in any list on the Web.
I have been around motors quite a while, rode in a VW around 52.
Need some tech tips, info and good lit on the motor, which by the way
is an 89er. Was this motor fitted by Volvo as standard?
Any help would be much appreciated
Regards
Bill.

All I know is that these 6 cylinder diesel engines were originally mounted in VW LT's, those sea container shaped vans. Most probably other engine codes are used. Can't help you with any technical details though...

The Volvos probably got unique engine codes not shared with any VW models. Also, it is not an unusual car ou have there, VW powered diesel Volvos first rolled out in 1979, with the last cars being made was in the mid 90s, these were the 850 series which were powered by the 5-cylinder TDI from the Audi 100/A6.

Thanks Perl, I am getting happier about the car after your info. It is a 6 cyl
and having had another look at the engine have found the Audi motif below
the VW. Regards,BILL

VW/Audi is allways stamped in combination.
(well, atleast since somewhere in the seventies).

These 6 cylinder diesels make a lot of noise sucking in air,. and tend to last and last and last. The fact that the engine code is different to Vdub's like the LT doesn't mean it's any different to an LT engine: Volkswagen has very strange ways of coding there engine's; an HH blok is exactly the same as an GF blok, only the coolant-water-pipe is about 10 cm longer; Different code. On other blocks (HB) the compression changed, cams changed, even the fuel-requirments changed (octane 98 vs octane 91), but the engine code remained the same).

Anyways: We do like pictures :) (HINT)

Is it a Turbo Diesel with or without a intercooler? (D24T or D24TIC)

The 850 was not the only Volvo with the 5-cilinder Audi Diesel engine (140bhp), this engine was also used in the S/V70 (1997-2000) and the new V70 (2000-2001)....

Ok, thanks Jeroen, I was under the assumption that Volvo replaced the Audi engine with their then newly developed D5 when they facelifted the 850 to become the S/V70 series. I'm not very much into Volvos though, so I'm probably wrong.

Hi to all the Members who took time to answer my question on VW powered Volvo.
A tech point has come up. How do you time the the injector pump on the 89, 2.4,6cyl,Turbo diesel ? Have just fitted new heater plugs and had to move the pump to fit 5&6. Thought I had fitted it back on original timing but now my cars called Smoky Joe !!! Cant find a manual anywhere. Can any body HELP,please.

PerL 10-09-2006 21:50

I remember when fiddling around with my sisters Golf diesel, I got a tip that was as easy as it was efective. Just move the pump to the point where there is the least amount of smoke. That is where the timing should be closest to correct.

I must admit that I'm not sure how one does a proper timing of these engines.
