I wanna talk engines

I'm currently thinking about selling my Audi 80 and buy me a Polo for a 2nd car. Inspired by my friend Gallagher, I want a fun little VW for myself. I want something newer than him though, so I'm getting preferably an 86c or posibly a 2F. I want the Coupe bodystyle and an injection engine, because I'm sick and tired of the damned carbs VW/Audi used in the 80s (I have a 2E2 in my 80). This lmits me to 1989 to 1994 models.

I of course want more power than 55 horses, that's why I started this thread. A G40 is out of the question, it's too pricey, and the 75 horse engines are rare as hen's teeth here in Norway. Importing a 75-horse car is also out of the question, because of our insane import taxes. Getting a 75-horse engine abroad is a possible option, of course.

That's why I'm thinking of some old school tuning to bring a 1.3i up to the 70-100 horse range. What can be done to this injection engine, while still keeping a stock appearance? I dont want a DMV guy to open the hood and find a 6N GTI engine...

I was thinking about things like a 1.4 or 1.6 engine block under the older cyl.head, maybe injection system from a Polo 1.6 or Golf 1.8 or something like that, also things like a different camshaft, a better exhaust manifold, and so on.

I dont know too much about these engines, so please educate me.

IB4TMotorcycle carb posse comes in.. probably your best bet for getting some umphh out of a small engine..

PerL 08-08-2007 23:05

Not necessarily the best, plus, I want everything to look stock. Stealth mods are the way to go!

vwleusden 08-08-2007 23:14

Almost stock on the outside with a fucking good engine, that's stealth mode ;)

Just listen to Jaap, 1.6 with motorcycle carbs or even better but much more expensive, 36mm throttle bodies.

PerL 08-08-2007 23:28

You guys make it sound so easy, but we have cops and a DMV that frown on things like that without any approval. Because of this, bike carbs are out of the question. Actually, any carbs are out of the question, I fucking hate them!

PerL 10-08-2007 18:19

Noone has anything else to say than MC carbs?

G-eert-40 10-08-2007 18:50

why do you think a G40 is to expensive? you don't have to tune your engine, it's already 113 hp. it's a good engine.

Mark1 11-08-2007 00:57

The 125 hp 1.6 16V Polo GTI engine fits...

But the G40 will probably give you the biggest bang for your bucks and is easy to install.

sjampoo 11-08-2007 08:53

Guys: Please READ :)

G40 -> to expensive
Independent Throttle Body's : -> No stock look, so problems with: police/tax/insurance

He want's stocklook, power, and NO carbs

So: the 3F engine would be the best buy, BUT they quite rare up north

There's only one engine in my mind that would give you :
- fuel injection
- stock look
- lots o torque (or at least: more then a 1.3i)
- easy installation (engine wise)
- time consuming electrics, but still 'easy'
- Pleanty availability

Find yourself a ABU or AEX engine out of a Golf 3 / Vento

It's look stock, since it's a singe point injection thingy, can be mounted with the standard engine mounts, the airbox of a polo can be used, gearbox and everything...

It's got about 75 bhp (un-tuned) so it must have potential :)

I'll get my coat...

But your right of course sjamp, and it should'nt be too hard to get hold of one of them engines.

PerL 11-08-2007 19:38

Thanks, sjampoo, finally someone who understands... But, as you say, that engine is a Monopoint. What if I were to find a multipoint (Digijet) engined car? My brother used to own a 1990 Polo Fox OpenAir with the Digijet 1.3. Wouldn't that engine have an even better potential for power than the monopoint setup?

Also, what about exhaust upgrades, camshaft, head work, all that stuff?

Dennis@polo86c.nl 14-08-2007 22:59

AEE is 1.6 Multipoint.
Still 75HP but 135Nm @ 2800 rpm.
Not bad to start with.

You can find this engine in Golf/Vento 3, Polo 6N.

Gallagher 15-08-2007 19:31

My dear Per ;) I bought a 3f engine to use with my racetrack polo.. this engine with convensional tuning.. Camshaft, exhaust and some working on the head combined with a better multipoint injection should work brilliant...

I have done a bit of research on this area ;)

Gallagher 15-08-2007 19:38

remeber, we have also got people in norway able to print chips to make g40 injections work on n/a engines.. that should work very well.. was thinking about dooing this on my engine before I came across injection from an MH engine and a set of 4 mc carbs..

Edit: I have talked with frode G, and the digijet used on 3f engines is a multipoint injection and it copes easy with 95hp in its original state. Higher that 95 honest hp is hard to get in a 3f without doing some serious work. So just tune your 3f engine and use the original injection and ignition..

Even the regular 55hp NZ injection with multiple injection works uptil 95hk. This injection is easy to get.. think I have one lying around somewhere.. This can also be used with g40 or g60 injectors if you need a richer mixture..
so.. good news for you Per :)

PerL 16-08-2007 01:44

Thanks Toki, that's what I wanted to talk to you about the other day... I'll call you one of these days!

Gallagher 17-08-2007 12:51

I will be waiting patiently by the phone :)
