Hey Dutchy, time to update this. I will probably be in Holland in about a month or so, looking for an A2 I can drive for the rest of the trip(until the mid august). A1s and A3s might be possible as well.

For now, my main question is - does ANYBODY know how to insure a car as a foreigner? At least the liability part?

btw, I have not updated the thread in a while...

Batan 15-04-2006 11:15

Will be in Amsterdam today, Saturday, April 15. Anyobody for a beer? I will be around for about a week.

Tjaap 15-04-2006 20:23

give me a call... shot you my number...
didn't hear anything from him yet, but twinscrew should be in holland at the moment aswell..

you're welcome to stay at my place if you need a place to crash.. don't have an extra bedroom though, so you'll need to stay on the couch or something :)

Batan 16-04-2006 12:30

Thanks man. We already have the situation covered(I have a friend in Amsterdam) but thanks for the offer. :)
Will give you a call!

Also, any input on which paper to buy for auto classifieds and which sites to go to buy a car in Amsterdam are welcome!
...anybody selling a reliable VW for 300-500 Euros? :D

berendd 16-04-2006 13:14

check

www.marktplaats.nl
or www.speurders.nl

and search for golf... polo's and jetta's are cheaper though...

Thanks man. Jetta is definetly possibility as well :)

berendd 16-04-2006 18:48

450 euros, but just a 1300cc engine, not so fast but reliable

Batan 16-04-2006 19:44

I was just looking at that site. good info! I was also about to ask about reliability of the 1.3 engines so thanks for the answer! :)

1. Do 1.6l ones come with fuel injection AND carbs?
2. Any other things to watch on these Euro-only A2s(1.3 and 1.6) enginewise?
3. When you buy a car in Netherlands that is inspected until Dec 2006(for example), does the car have to be inspected again when it changes hands?
Also, if anybody from Netherlands have an advice about buying/insuring(as a foreigner) here, please IM me or post. I just need it insured until mid August and I have not checked how that works here.

Thanks!

berendd 16-04-2006 23:27

when it is inspected till december it is inspected for every owner you could imagine..

insurance won't be a big problem I think (as long as you pay enough), but getting the car on your name could be a bit tricky and I think you will need something like a working/staying permit.

Batan 17-04-2006 00:01

Damn...well I have a friend here, maybe I could plate it in his name?

Marco 17-04-2006 00:21

As far as i think that should be possible, but he has to insure it and note that he is not the common driver

Batan 17-04-2006 00:24

Well, that would be the last resort, I have to ask him. Damn, its hard to believe that you cannot buy a car and drive it while not having a permanent residence.

René 17-04-2006 07:49

and rent a car...isn`t that an option?

berendd 17-04-2006 09:10

read this PDF file by the dutch car registration department

For 4 months of renting that would be WAY too expensive.

Batan 19-04-2006 21:02

Does anybody know where can I find a list of used car dealers in Amsterdam?
And by the way, seems like Tjaap will be around for saturday so anybody interested in beer, let us know! :D

Batan 20-04-2006 11:06

It is no longer legal for a person who does not own a residence in or otherwise legally reside in a country belonging to the European Union to register and in turn insure an automobile in such country. Typically a few utility bills and perhaps a property-rental lease in one's name suffice as evidence of such residency. :shake:

However, there are four ways around this prohibition:
(1) you can "short-term" lease a brand new vehicle; :shake:
(2) you can purchase a brand new BMW, Mercedes, or Volvo for eventual export via the manufacturer's tourist delivery program :shake:

... or (4) you can have a close personal friend or relative who resides in an EU country carry these necessities for you

Hm...seems that the only chance is number four.

I want my A2!!!!!

Tjaap 23-04-2006 02:11

we've been pondering all night over a few beers about the car problem. still isn't solved but we have a "last resort"option atleast but it's not my favourite.

well we had fun though.
din't make much pics but i believe Batan has some funny ones

here's mine:

Batan 23-04-2006 11:29

Hehe, nice pics Jaap. We had fun last night, we should do it again! Yes that option is not my favourite either so I will explore everything I can before that. Thanks a bunch though!

I have some faith in that dealership thing...that might have a solution.
