Finished up the inner fenders

Working on completing the front sides of the fenders

Cutting up and using another trailer fender

Used the planishing hammer to round off the cut edge to match the rest of the fender

Going to use some metal mesh to make some compartments in the corners of the bed which will be covered by the bed sides.

Thanks! Here is todays progress.
Engine compartment venting to the Bed

Pocket in corner of the bed for venting and hauling greasy items or just things that I don't want sliding around, chain etc.
This will be hidden by the Bed Sides

The passenger side is done!

Pocket behind the right rear wheel

Welded on some Dzus fasteners for a removable cover over the charcoal canister behind the left rear wheel.

Took the measurements for an Aluminum Treadplate bed floor. Going to the big city soon to pick it up. They have a huge shear so I can get the size I want and nice smooth lines.

Seriously impressive.
It's a great thread to read through and the craftmanship is amazing.
Can't wait to see the endproduct on the road

Thanks! Got it running today, trying to post the video now but will likely take hours to load. 1080p

It's Running!

Part 10

Ben Modified 31-12-2015 02:27

Sprayed the frame rails under the bed floor with some aerosol bed liner. Also drilled and tapped all the bed floor mounting points and bought some nylon washers to place between the bed floor and frame rails to allow air floor and prevent moisture accumulation.

1/4" Aluminum Bed Floor

Started playing around with an idea for the headlights. I made up a reversible locking spring loaded headlight mount to secure some polished bullet headlights. When rotated back, they resemble the dagmar bumperettes.

And started making up the under the cab lower rails.

Yes, but I am legal even without the glass as long as I am wearing eye protection. Seat belts are not required as the VW did not have them from the factory.

Ben Modified 04-01-2016 00:50

Started on a cage for the cab today. When finished, it will have 3 sets of 3 point seat belts!

Ben Modified 09-01-2016 01:42

The cage is done and the seat belts are in.

Fabricated a couple of outboard mounts and welded to the roll cage. Much stronger than stock.

No, the noise is already sufficiently boosted! The camera just doesn't do a good job of recording it.

Ben Modified 11-01-2016 01:24

I finally got around to re-covering the seat frame for the truck. Got tired of riding around on a piece of cardboard! I went ahead and installed seat heaters while I was at it.

Well after trying to tune out an "off idle" stumble, I was able to determine that the accelerator pump only delivers fuel sporadically. The electric choke hangs up a lot also. Looks like the carb will be replaced under the crate engine warranty in a week or so. In the meantime, here is short acceleration video from 1500 rpm to 5000. Off idle enough that it doesn't fall on its face.

Ben Modified 05-02-2016 13:51

The new carb is installed. Huge difference! No stumble, very responsive. No video yet, I have been busy pulling cars out of the woods.

I took the truck on its first road trip yesterday! Round trip was about 150 miles. There was no shortage of camera phones and thumbs up, which is always nice. One guy was gawking so hard he nearly hit the center divider. I drove it to Cars and Coffee in Jacksonville FL. I had never attended before and was expecting 50 cars. It was so big that the police were directing traffic for the 500 or so cars that were there! Also stopped off at an Autocross on Amelia Island, just to watch.

The truck drove great with no issues other than the lack of side glass and heat

Van Limburg 15-02-2016 08:45

Nice job! Looks great!

I started working on the bed sides. Using 20ga. steel and grafting in two VW bus engine vent louvers on the drivers side and a solid panel on the passenger side.

Started the sheet metal work under the doors on the cab. The tubing will serve as the bottom of the rocker panel.

Also going to rebuild the cab corners.

Temporarily held in place with a piece of angle iron.

Ran out of time, just need to smooth off the tack welds tomorrow

Everything is painted inside and out
