Default what engine to use in Mk2 Polo

Howsit ppl....

I live in South Africa and own the only MK2 Polo classic around....

Pondering on what engine i can use in this car.....Have tried some of the engines, i.e aba, 2e, etc....but they way too big and dont clear the chassis legs on either side....

Originally it had the 1100 crossflow motor, but i took it out cos i got so annoyed with the lack of power....Can anything be done to that motor to get more power....i.e rebore, headwork, blueprint/balance, lighten flywheel, etc ??? If so how much more power am i looking at without making a hole in my pocket. Thus solving my problem of trying to source an engine to fit in the engine bay ????

Please guys.....I need HELP !!!!

Thanks

My car below

The 1.6 ABU out of any Golf/Jetta III will drop right in,..

Exactly, but alternative to this is also 1.4 8V from Polo 6N which fits well.
