Automatic tranny!!

does anyone know how much horsepower can 4-speed automatic transmission can withstand? Some tell me it could only withstand 220bhp. I compare with Jap-car's auto-tranny which prove to withstand 500bhp++. How can we make VW's auto-tranny to do the same?
