Default 1996 golf

Im not sure of the 1996 golf is a mk2 or mk3 car, but here goes. I am trying to find out if the 2.0 in those cars is an interference fit engine or not. It threw the timing belt tensioner pulley while it was running, but i don't want to put a bunch of time and money into it if it hurt the engine.

in theory it isn't, but i'd check compression just to be sure nothing is bent because the car was running
