Hey Dutchy, time to update this. I will probably be in Holland in about a month or so, looking for an A2 I can drive for the rest of the trip(until the mid august). A1s and A3s might be possible as well.

For now, my main question is - does ANYBODY know how to insure a car as a foreigner? At least the liability part?

btw, I have not updated the thread in a while...

Thanks man. We already have the situation covered(I have a friend in Amsterdam) but thanks for the offer.
Will give you a call!

Also, any input on which paper to buy for auto classifieds and which sites to go to buy a car in Amsterdam are welcome!
...anybody selling a reliable VW for 300-500 Euros?

I was just looking at that site. good info! I was also about to ask about reliability of the 1.3 engines so thanks for the answer!

1. Do 1.6l ones come with fuel injection AND carbs?
2. Any other things to watch on these Euro-only A2s(1.3 and 1.6) enginewise?
3. When you buy a car in Netherlands that is inspected until Dec 2006(for example), does the car have to be inspected again when it changes hands?
Also, if anybody from Netherlands have an advice about buying/insuring(as a foreigner) here, please IM me or post. I just need it insured until mid August and I have not checked how that works here.

Thanks!

when it is inspected till december it is inspected for every owner you could imagine..

insurance won't be a big problem I think (as long as you pay enough), but getting the car on your name could be a bit tricky and I think you will need something like a working/staying permit.

As far as i think that should be possible, but he has to insure it and note that he is not the common driver

Well, that would be the last resort, I have to ask him. Damn, its hard to believe that you cannot buy a car and drive it while not having a permanent residence.

For 4 months of renting that would be WAY too expensive.

It is no longer legal for a person who does not own a residence in or otherwise legally reside in a country belonging to the European Union to register and in turn insure an automobile in such country. Typically a few utility bills and perhaps a property-rental lease in one's name suffice as evidence of such residency.

However, there are four ways around this prohibition:
(1) you can "short-term" lease a brand new vehicle;
(2) you can purchase a brand new BMW, Mercedes, or Volvo for eventual export via the manufacturer's tourist delivery program

... or (4) you can have a close personal friend or relative who resides in an EU country carry these necessities for you

Hm...seems that the only chance is number four.

I want my A2!!!!!

Hehe, nice pics Jaap. We had fun last night, we should do it again! Yes that option is not my favourite either so I will explore everything I can before that. Thanks a bunch though!

I have some faith in that dealership thing...that might have a solution.
