Default mk2 golf engine mod

i have just bought an 1986 mk2 8v golf gti. is there any way to increse the perfomance without an engine replacemant and what kind of bhp can i achieve.

You can start out with things such as an open air filter, camshafts, exhaust header preferably with a complete exhaust sytem with a bigger diameter. These things combined should produce something like an extra 15-20 BHP, if you want more then that, the investment will be a lot bigger.
