Default golf mk3 1.4 n reg gearbox help ;_(

Hello all

Ive just bought a mk3 golf 1.4 n reg, this is my first vw.

The car has been leaking gearbox oil from the clutch cyclinder seal,it is so worn that you can wobble it up and down and side to side.

It is causing me problems getting gears, sometimes you will only get 1st,3rd and 5th,and today I could only get 2nd ;-(

I have phoned up the garage I bought it from and although it was through ebay sold as seen they have offerd to fix if I supply parts which is good of them.

Is this common on the 1.4 golfs of this age,I had the gearbox oil changed today exspecting it to be empty and the oil was nearly full althought brown and mucky.

have phoned gsf and priced the clutch cyclinder seal and £3 so wont break the bank,do I need to get any other bits?

Thanks Paul.

In my book the mk3 models 1.4 & 1.6 don't have a hydraulic clutch at all...
Are you sure it is not the gear changing axle that comes out of the bottom of the box?
That axle has a seal notorious for leaking, costs are low as you said, but effects are big if the oil level drops below normal.
These gear boxes are not the best VW has fitted anyway...
