Van the samba:

The bus was infact intact when dumped in the lake in the early 70 ies. The reason for dumping it was a broken gearbox. The owner took of the wheels to use on a another VW, and pushed it over the edge with a tractor. The bus had a free fall of 2 car lenghts before hitting the water. This expalin the damage in the front and back. The samba landed about 50 feet below the surface. The good thing about such a parking space, is that no one has stolen any parts of it over the years. The cargofloor was fully intact, as well as the cabin floor, and of course the rubber mat was like new. All this happened this weekend, so I think the owner will post more pictures, and keep us posted on how the car reacts to fresh air in the days and weeks to come. It may seem the rust that is on the car is the same as it had when dumped. What appear as rust in the pictures is in fact some sort of fungus, and when removed there is fresh metal under, almost sandblasted. Some metals have "eaten" the others, so there will be some work getting it back on the road. But this bus soes not have rust in "the usual places". Hat of to the owner spending this amount of money on such a rescue mission. This will be an interesting object to follow...
