Speculation is that production will take place in South Africa for Africa, ASEAN region and Western Europe, China for the Chinese market, Russia for Russia, Brazil for South America and Mexico for the North America region. VW wants to take full advantage of the downsizing trend by offering all three versions to US buyers while giving a viable alternative to the US-bound Ford Fiesta hatch range and its upcoming sedan model.

Powertrains will likely reflect those of the hatch, including a 1.2 TSI, a 1.6 TDI and the 7-speed DSG transmission. The 110kW (150hp) GTI was only offered as a hatchback so that should not change. Hopefully, VW will include the recently launched Polo BlueMotion with it's staggering 71.3 mpg rating. Such fuel economy could help some Americans consider diesel powerplants as a viable option.

The first public appearance is to take place at the 2010 New Delhi Auto Expo in January while Europe gets its first glimpse at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Officially Official: 2011 Volkswagen Polo sedan unveiled in Russia

Volkswagen finally unveiled its new sub-compact Polo sedan in Moscow today, billing it as the first ever VW developed specifically for the Russian market. While Russia may be the first market for the trunked Polo, it isn't likely to have an exclusive on it for long. The Polo sedan is expected to make its way to North America within the next 12 months as part of VW's drive to expand its sales here to 800,000 units a year by 2018.

Like Americans, Russians consumers have generally had a preference for notchbacks over hatchbacks despite the sacrifices in utility. In an effort to keep the Polo sedan affordable in Russia, Volkswagen is equipping it with a 103-horsepower 1.6-liter gasoline inline four-cylinder engine with a choice of five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

When the Polo arrives in the U.S., it will likely offer either this combination or the 1.2-liter turbocharged, direct injected TSI four- cylinder that we drove in Germany last fall.
